Rising Flame is an India based nonprofit organisation working for the recognition, protection, and promotion of human rights of people with disabilities.
Holding Space - Deconstructing disability experiences and navigating ableism in therapeutic conversations – Part 1, is the first of a series that Rising Flame put together to respond to the glaring gap in understanding the mental health needs of disabled people. The self-learning manual not only works to expand the understanding of mental health practitioners, but also highlights the the effects of ableism on disabled people’s lives and its effects on our mental health.
I worked with Rising Flame to visualise and create an illustrated digital and print publication that also serves as a workbook. The manual weaves in illustrations that capture disabled joy, care and community along with anecdotes from people with disabilities, activities, spaces to pause and reflect and more. We were guided to conceptualise the manual around our belief that access is joy and love.
You can find the manual here, or on Rising Flame’s page here.
Note for screen reader users: This manual is best read on a pdf reader after downloading it.
